Behind the Painting
Self-Indentity: Ego
Canvas, acrylic, watercolor, & oil pastels
This piece is entitled Ego because I believe that everyone has different layers within their indentity and personality that that they are proud, but sometimes unaware or unappreciative of. This painting mostly has personal symbolism incorporated in it to bring out my view of myself. The sunglasses that cover my eyes symbolize how I do not allow individuals to influence or get to know who I really am. Since the eyes are the gateway to a person's heart, I make sure that my eyes are concealed so people do not look at me through my eyes, but rather my internal self I display in my artwork. The red lips mainly represent how it is through the way you speak and your words that allow others to get to know who you really are and your level of sophistication which allows you to get your message across. The indigo background symbolizes my sorrow and sadness which I try to hide in the "background". I chose to paint my body black and white to show how I view myself as simplistic, yet surprisingly end up creating many layers to my personality in my simplistic approach.
Environmental Art: Conformity
Triptyic: Mix media, arylic on canvas
This piece is mainly a wake-up call to what is going on in our current society. One of the main problems facing adolescents circulates around conformity. With increasing technological availability and abuse comes a decline in original thinking and creativity that goes outside the box. The figure in the painting has trapped herself in a cell where she is her only savior. By conforming, she is trapped inside a cell, which forces her to think inside the box unless she gets rid of the bars which hold her in. The earthy tones represent warmth, security, and a sense of uniqueness which is what she is lacking. My choice of using three canvases and ripped paper to give it texture is ironic in a sense because it makes the piece extremely unique. Through this portrayal of conformity in a non-conforming manner, I am encouraging today's youth to be creative, original, and themselves, instead of trying to do the been-done or be the has-been.
